A holdout is a comparison group. In Nostos, a store-billing holdout is a group of similar subscribers who remain on app-store billing while a migration cohort is moved to web billing.

Why holdouts matter

Migration can create false confidence if the team only tracks conversion. Holdouts help answer better questions:
  • Did churn rise in a way migration may have caused?
  • Did support issues rise?
  • Did payment success change?
  • Did annual or monthly behavior shift?
  • Did the cohort respond differently by tenure, plan, or geography?

What is compared

When a holdout is not enough

Holdouts are one input. They do not replace judgment. Recurr also considers qualitative support signal, edge cases, brand sensitivity, payment-rail readiness, subscriber tenure, and the commercial importance of the next cohort before scaling.
